Woodstick 2007 will be raising money for Hearing Regeneration as a world-wide effort, and Network Tacoma a local non-profit organization to help the homeless, and we will also continue funding local school music programs.
Our main goal over the next ten years is to fund hearing research at the University of Washington's School of Medicine, specifically, the Virginia Merrill Bloedel Hearing Research Center. Hearing loss is the most common human disability: one person in 10 is directly affected, and 40 percent of the population has a hearing-impaired friend or family member. All of these people have experienced first hand the difficulties that occur when people cannot communicate normally. The Hearing Regeneration Initiative at the Virginia Merrill Bloedel Hearing Research Center is a chance for scientists world-wide to share information on hearing regeneration.
Rotarians for Hearing Regeneration led by members of the Clover Park Rotary Club have adopted the Woodstick program, which was originally conceived by Chris Kimball and established by the Rotary Club of Tacoma #8 to help eradicate polio around the world. That goal is now within reach. Ten years from now we hope that hearing regeneration will also be within reach. That will give us the accomplishment of two major goals that change lives world-wide from one excellent and fun program involving drums and music.
The Hard of Hearing Hall of Fame is working with Rotarians for Hearing Regeneration to help educate people for prevention of hearing loss as well as a conduit for donations for hearing regeneration.
